Fintan McHugh’s a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. Son of Northern Irish uilleann piper Joe McHugh he has inherited a love and passion for Irish songs and music. In the spirit of the traveling troubadour Fintan sings and accompanies himself on the guitar, the Irish-cittern and harmonica. He is also the singer of “The Joe McHugh Band”. They’re currently working on an album to be recorded in october 2017.
“Wait Till The Clouds Roll By” is Fintan’s debut solo recording and it is already receiving very positive reviews. The famous Irish music journalist John O’ Regan said: ”Wait Till The Clouds Roll By reveals a major new Irish folk talent. ...a sparse yet complex, raw yet elegant debut. For an opening move in a solo career for Fintan McHugh none could be better and more illuminating than Wait till the Clouds Roll By.”
Fintan has lived variously in Ireland, Switzerland, Germany and Belgium exploring an assortment of artistic avenues. During his stay in Galway he built a cittern (a 10-string bouzouki) in Paul Doyle’s workshop and a violin under the guidance of Paul Bradley. Finally he settled for just long enough to record his debut CD on which his self-built cittern can be heard.
The album was sensitively recorded and produced by the great uilleann piper Joe McKenna at his Scarr Mountain Studio in Co. Wicklow, Ireland. Reminiscent of records from the 60‘s and 70‘s the sound is raw and fresh. The recording of single takes without overdubs allowed each song to be captured in its unique moment in time, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The album consists of a lovely selection of not only traditional folk songs of Irish, but also of Scottish, English and American origin, as well as two self-penned ones. Fintan has an unusually compelling vocal style sounding fresh, personalised and distinctive which often stems from deeply traditional sean-nós.
